Name: Robert Evans
Company: I’m CEO of Velrada.
What does your company do?
Consultancy and software.
Why do you love running a fast-growth company?
The people. I know that’s the usual cliché but watching people grow and succeed in what they do, and then mentor others to do the same, is the most rewarding thing.
How much of the time do you wish you weren’t?
What are the hardest things about it?
The people. Another cliché but it seems we live in a world where people can claim to be whoever they want to be, and it’s always a challenge to know the difference between those who are who they say they are, and those who aren’t.
Tell us about a favorite nugget of wisdom from a mentor
I have 48, all from the book ‘The 48 Laws of power’. A mentor gave me a copy.
What’s your greatest business achievement?
The sale of my previous business. It seemed easy at the time to build and run a successful firm but that was pre the global financial crisis.
Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with?
Steve Coogan. I have been watching The Trip to Italy again recently with Coogan and Rob Brydon. They are hilarious.
Where is the consulting industry heading?
Around in the usual circles; the issues of people and management go back to the beginnings of mankind, but there seems to be no shortage of witch doctors who have the latest and greatest ideas to sell, although real technology remains the constant true and tangible driver of change.
What advice would you give your 21-year-old self?
Take a year off, travel around Europe, Greek islands etc. and have as much fun as possible, and then go back.
What major benefit has Kimble delivered to your business?
Maturity, there is no substitute for management but a stable and reliable information system is key.
